Pots & Plates 2016 - Bridged Hall

Inspiration details:

New Ceramics Gallery V & A

The new galleries tell the significant 'stories' of ceramic history, involving for the first time a juxtaposition of Asian and European ceramics to explain their inseparable influence on each other. The processes involved in turning raw clay into an infinite variety of ornamental and useful wares are fully explained. A room has been devoted to architectural ceramics and a new temporary exhibition gallery has been created.

Artist Statement

Bridged Hall

The work is an experimental screen print collection inspired by the new Ceramics Galleries of the V&A Museum. It comprises six sets of 11.7" x 16.5" print samples with hand sewn and stiffened headers in calico and cardboard. Each set includes between three and five samples on a variety of textiles including upholstery and fashion fabrics in linen, velvet, wool, cotton, jute and polyesters in print binder and foil. One commercial pattern off-cut has been used as a print through texture in two samples. The work can be displayed either in a single row or as a block of three by two.

The work responds directly to the curation of the galleries which created for the maker an impression of drifting in a world of whirling layers of flying pots and plates. The colour palette was drawn from my impression of a background of greens, blues and yellows with highlights of gold and turquoise seen from the corner of the eye.

This works comprises my submission for the Screen Print Block of Morley College's Textile Foundation course. This year long course has given me a design understanding and methodology that allows me to give voice to my creativity in a way that I have long craved. I have never really studied as a practicing artist before and I was struggling to express my creativity. That struggle is no longer the same. This course has been wonderfully life changing.

My submission includes three images of the work itself and two of my many sketchbook pages of preparatory drawings, painting, mark making, colour studies, photographs and process development and experimentation.
