Artist Statement

Anna Jablonska

My chosen piece from the V&A is called 'Lollipop Isle'. When I first saw it I saw people. I saw a colourful crowd of individuals, each one with their own identity, origin, history, roots. The glass cube that the lollipops are sitting on is a representation of the globe, our planet that we live in. I decided to create a series of photographic portraits as a representation of a beauty and diversity of the human race. I've always been fascinated by discovering cultures, people, cuisines, colours of our world. I love travelling and I think this is where this passion and inspiration comes from. Growing up in Eastern Europe made me appreciate it even more, as I hadn't experienced this kind of diversity and different cultures in my childhood. I decided to photograph 5 different people, in a low key light, classic portraits showing each one's beauty and individuality, but as a series they represent united people of our world.
