For my entry into the 2016 V&A Inspired by competition I created a hat. I spend my Tuesday evenings attending a Millinery class at Northampton College & here is where I learnt the skills and applied them to the process of making my hat with the help of my tutor.
The hat is inspired by an exhibit within the Museum of Childhood - Jane’s Patchwork Party Dress (1944).
The hat has been made out of felt & various materials to create the patchwork decoration. The shape which I manipulated the hat into was to replicate the intricate pleats and folds on the Patchwork dress. The materials used for the patchwork were collected from children’s clothes from charity shops, then cut on the bias, before being hand-sewn together to hint towards the childlikeness of the dress. The patchwork was applied to the hat around the bottom edge so that it is just peeping out above the eye with a large patchwork bow sewn onto the left side of the hat which was in reply to the gathering, bow like stitching on the cuff of the dresses arm.
The colours I chose to work with on the hat were chosen in symmetry to those on the Patchwork dress. The hat itself was a pale blue and the patchwork pieces were pastel colours such as pinks, yellow and lilac.
It took me a few of my millinery sessions to decide on a design to work with. I sketched some initial drawings and worked with different shapes to come up with the best possible outcome. My design style has been shown through the design boards I have also submitted along with professional photographs of the finished hat.
