Artist Statement

Jane Beaumont

The inspiration for my coiled, smooth white crank clay submission is drawn from Fernando Casasempere's large, organic and sensuous vessel as well as the interior architecture of the Simon Sainsbury Gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The outer shell of my piece, finished in manganese oxide, acknowledges both the raw, unglazed presentation of Casasempere's vessel and the ochre brickwork of the gallery. However, like the gallery space and the 'light and dark' quality of the vessel, the inner form of my piece - which is finished with a smooth and transparent glaze - changes with the play of light.
