Artist Statement

Cristina Walden

While visiting the V&A a glass sculpture called " Tango in Paris" caught my eye.
The artist was inspired on the Eiffel Tower and evokes a woman dancing.
I loved the movement it showed and I thought I would like to create that beautiful motion on my own sculpture.
I used crank stoneware clay. Started with a slab 33×33×10cm, cutting out the shape and carving out the inside.
I used bright blue, blue and white slip applied with brush and fingers to mimic the water movement.
A combination of three colour glazes being clear blue, Chinese chun and zirconium white was applied with different brushes.
The piece was fired in a gas kiln to 1260°-1300°and reduced at 1020°, this technique resulted in a more natural effect which gave further energy and movement.
