Artist Statement

Irena Molnarfi

I am frequent visitor to the V&A, on my own or with friends and family visiting London.
Through the years my sketch books were filled with interesting details, shapes plus ideas. So this year I have found myself with 6 different ideas for "Inspired by...", and as time was getting closer to submission and the Tutor was 'nagging' to see my final design, I sprung to action and selected one of my ideas. I decided to make a pendant in the shape of a square picture frame which will hold the "abstract picture". This "abstract picture" represents bits of fragile fragment of woven silk from Hami,China, 8th c. AD (from which I took my inspiration for the competition,) and was shaped by etching a thin plate of brass; in some parts the brass was etched half-way through the thickness, in the rest all the way through. For the background to the picture I used patination, on brass obtained by immersing it in sawdust dampened with a solution of ammonia and vinegar (see photo DSCN3219 VA3). I cut the decorative surface to the same size as "picture" and then made the picture frame by soldering 4 sides to the square plate; on the back of which I soldered a brass tube (whole length of one side) for threading through it the double stainless steel wire rope for hanging the pendant. The frame and the clasp on the end of the wire were then polished with wet emery paper to give a mat-finish surface thus not competing with the high-polish of the "picture". Finally, I inserted the background and the "picture".
