I chose the Korean organza origami dress as my inspiration for my necklace. I was drawn to it's elegance and delicacy, yet strong, clear form. I loved the fluidity of the dress as if it could be made of tissue paper instead of the laser cut material from which it is actually made. To reflect this illusion I wanted to use a form of metal that looked like it could be fabric, so I chose to work with wire mesh. Although the initial form of the necklace and the emulation of the folds of the fabric came to me quickly, the necklace itself developed over time from a simple three mesh coned piece with handmade chain to a full garland of mesh cones reflecting the tapered shape of the origami dress itself. I experimented with different sizes of mesh until I found one which would be solid enough to retain its shape and yet open enough to appear light. The difficulty came in making the mesh smooth and wearable without diminishing its lightness. Keeping the dress in mind, I experimented with binding the edges with red thread, folding the edges into seams and balling the ends of the individual wires, but these compromised the elegance and delicacy of the dress. I finally settled on soldering and filing the edges smooth in order to keep the crisp, fine shape whilst ensuring that the necklace remains a wearable piece of jewellery.
