Louise Howard

My piece, "The Space She Left Behind" was made in response to a visit to the V&A shortly after my mum had died in October 2015. While I was there, I was drawn to work that was unsettled and restless. That was about something other than the image.....but spoke to me of atmosphere, of being overwhelmed and of moments that would never return.
I wanted to create a ceramic piece that reflected these feelings not as a frozen moment, but rather expressing the relentlessness of time and of our inability to control it. Birds in flight are magical and beautiful, scary and intimidating, here one moment and gone the next. I hope that by their use in "The Space She Left Behind" I have managed to interpret some of the feelings that the loss of a loved one can evoke.
