Artist Statement

Nicola Atchley

I have walked along this beach in Portugal for many years and I wanted to produce a book to catalogue my walk. I have looked at prints, drawings and book arts at the V&A which have helped produce this work.
I started with quick sketches followed by slightly larger detailed drawings. I made a long collagraph showing the run of rocks and cliffs on the beach using a sandstone ink colour. I was interested in the various lines I saw on the beach and incorporated these into a linear format - lines of seaweed left by the receding tide, lines of stones and a stone which has its own linear markings. The leaves of the book are placed in concertina folds with lines stitched down the back of each fold with three longer pull out sections within the book. Finally I bound the book with a blind embossing print of seagulls footprints.
The methods and materials I used in this book are drawings in pencil, graphite and ink, graphite rubbings, collagraph print, lino relief printing, dry point print and blind emboss for the cover.
I want the reader to take a journey through the book, opening the sections, walking past the rocks and cliffs looking at the sandstone rubbings, weed and stones and returning back to the start of the book with its concertina format.
