I started attending a sculpture class at the Mary Ward Centre in 2014. I initially worked in various mediums, but quickly became intrigued with stone carving.
I was inspired by the abstract shape and simple curves of the 1930’s hat in the V&A collection. I like geometric shapes and am currently interested in the mobius strip. The hat has a twist in it similar to a mobius strip and inspired me to make this shape in alabaster stone. I chose alabaster because as a beginner it is a softer and easier stone to start with, and because the translucence of it echoes the luxurious shiny material used in the hat.
I made a clay maquette first so I could understand how the shape worked and also to practice the shape before I started to carve into the alabaster. My course tutor was very helpful in giving me technical advice in both building the clay maquette and in how to use the various carving tools. I spent many hours perfecting this piece ensuring the translucence was visually pleasing. My chosen piece of alabaster is mostly white, but has a hint of beige colour at the top of the twist, which is paralleled in the 1930’s hat.
The sculpture is completed by a wooden oak base, which my tutor also gave me technical advice on. I carved a shallow hollow in the top for the stone sculpture to sit in and sanded and polished it thus ensuring it looked a part of the sculpture and not a separate piece. I chose this base as it elegantly complements the hint of colour where the carving twists, and the colour of the 1930’s hat.
I found the whole process exciting and absorbing and it has inspired me to attempt other stone carving projects.
