Rooms 113 to 114e Ironworks
I have always loved this long set of rooms, like a wide corridor. I can hear this space as I walk through it. Not only does the metal and its spacing and patterns suggest sounds, (such as a child running a stick across the railings), but each item is full of its own history, and its particular use. The mechanics of that resound in the space.

My piece ‘Las Doce en punto y sereno (midnight on the dot and serene)’ reflects exactly that history. I was fascinated by the ornate and complex systems of the locks in room 114b then, my attention was caught by this particular wrought iron Spanish lock. I remembered the ‘Serenos’ and decided to work with this. As it is such a beautiful object, I am also having a piece cut into metal. Though flat, it still has its keyhole, the view through to the other side, that inside/outside quality, portals to knowledge, secrets behind and another life outside. It embodies this glimpse into the past life of an object. The portal theme itself, of course, holding a variety of interpretations.

The first record of the existence of the Sereno’ in Spain, is from 1715. They were like night watch men, except they also held keys to the buildings and opened up the main doors, often in wrought iron frames, to people arriving home at night. The person would clap to call them, the Sereno would beat his large stick or ‘chuzo’ on the ground and the sound alerted the caller to their proximity. In my sound work I have set the scene and taken poetic liberty in my build up to exaggerate the echoing and resounding of the specific sounds in what would have been very quiet streets.
