Walking through the great halls of the Victoria & Albert Museum, I am reminded once again why it is described as the worlds greatest collection of art and design. Finding inspiration should be easy but after viewing Collection after Collection, I make my way to the top floor and enter the Ceramics Galleries.

My first view of my ‘inspired by’ choice is from afar and I am immediately struck by it’s bold aesthetic of contrasting white stripes against a dark background. Feeling a strong sense of serendipity I make my approach. Dazzle 3 is the name of this tall sculptural ceramic vessel and I have found my inspiration.

Dazzle was a form of camouflage designed during the First World War by British artist Norman Wilkinson. This series of complex patterns made up of intersecting geometric shapes was painted on war ships in contrasting colours in order to mislead the enemy about a ship's course, the ‘dazzle’ made it difficult to estimate a target’s range, speed and heading.

Using paper cut-outs for preliminary sketching, I decided to use glass as my material of choice and my initial thoughts were to create a vessel shape in a nod to the original work which inspired me. After a brief critique of the chosen piece with my tutor I later decided that the final work would be a 9” sq wall panel triptych.

Each panel makes reference to both the original ‘Dazzle’ design and the Dazzle 3 ceramic vessel through the colour choices of black and white, the circular periscope ‘view’ and chevron patterning.
The middle panel references the history of war at sea, in the form of a sonar screen detailed on rippled ‘sea’ glass and bronze background in homage to the brass detailing that can be found on a ship’s deck.
